How to Choose a Watermelon Right

1. Never buy a watermelon before August. Even the earliest kinds naturally ripen in the end of July!

2. When you pat it with hand, a ripe watermelon produces a muffled sound.

3. Ripe watermelon crackles even during a small pressure.

4. Never buy cracked watermelon.

5. Too big watermelon in the pile is overfed; too small one is usually unripe. Choose only watermelons of medium size.

6. A large white spot on the side of watermelon is a sign of immaturity. Choose a melon with a small white spot.

7. Ripe watermelon is easily scratched with a fingernail.

8. Withered pedicle is not an indicator of ripeness!

9. On the cut fibers must be white. Fiber of yellow color is a sign of nitrates excess.

10. Nitrates in watermelon are distributed unevenly. Most of them are under the rind and stem. So it is better to give flesh from the middle to children.

11. Watermelon with a sour smell can be seriously poisoned.
